When you first see Japanese garlic, you may be concerned by its somewhat different outward appearance. Don't be alarmed, however! In actuality, Japanese garlic is exactly like garlic in other parts of the world and can be prepared using the same easy steps. Here are some visual guidelines to help you out:
First, we need to peel off the garlic's "skin" -- the thin, translucent layer that surrounds the garlic cloves. Wash the exterior of the garlic, then place the bulb on a smooth, flat surface.
Next, use a knife to slice open the skin and release the cloves.
So far, so good! At this point, the cloves will be loose. It's not ready to eat quite yet, however; each clove also has a protective covering. You can slice an edge open, and peel it with a knife...
...or use a garlic peeling tube. These things really work!
Your garlic is now ready to eat! Mmm mmm.
